Outdoor equipment and exercise
What is an outdoor exercise area for older adults?
Physical activity and exercise have long been recognised as essential elements of a healthy lifestyle; in older adults, physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of health problems and can reduce all-cause mortality. However, exercise for older adults has typically been targeted to indoor venues.
Exercising outdoors not only improves fitness, it also ticks most of the boxes that contribute to wellbeing.
Is it safe?
Yes. As with every other exercise scenario, it is better if the outdoor exercise space and equipment are designed with older adults in mind, and user instruction is provided. Purpose-built equipment is available that targets functional movement and balance, whilst recognising the limitations in range of movement and stability that many older adults experience.
When this equipment is situated in a suitable outdoor space it provides real positives to creating an age-friendly community.
Who can use it?
Whilst the outdoor exercise area is designed with older adults in mind it is equally appropriate for all ages, leading to opportunities for increased inter-generational and social engagement.
How much?
WellMark can develop a simple outdoor exercise in a retirement village for a fairly modest amount, using existing spaces and infrastructure. We can also assist with larger, more ambitious projects; where a village is located next to a park or other public space there may be opportunities for larger co-developments with Councils or other government organisations. Contact the team to discuss what the possibilities are in your location.
