Exercise classes
What do we know about the benefits of exercise for seniors?
The mountain of evidence supporting the benefits of physical activity including aerobic and muscle strengthening activities and balance training for older people continues to grow. Regular physical activity will reduce the risk of falling, maintain independent lifestyle, and improve outcomes from chronic illness and some of the mental health declines associated with ageing.
‘We already have an exercise class.’
Let us make some suggestions to enhance what you already have in place. Offering menu of physical activities can then cater to different preferences and levels of physical function.
Should older adults be doing exercise – isn’t it dangerous?
Actually the opposite is true… being inactive is dangerous for your health! The less exercise, the greater the risk of falling, the higher the incidence of chronic illness and the faster the functional decline. The key thing for your residents is the provision of opportunities delivered safely; by experienced professionals; who can assess the individual risk factors and prescribe appropriate activities to suit individual need.
